2 Dead, Shots Fired At Police In Kensington Standoff
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Authorities say two people have been found dead inside a home after a barricade situation Saturday in the Kensington section of Philadelphia.
SWAT teams along with dozens of police cars, fire trucks and ambulances were on the scene as authorities say a man barricaded himself inside a house after firing gunshots at police officers.
This began around 2 p.m. on the 3500 block of Emerald Street when police say officers were responding to reports of shots being fired. As soon as police arrived, the shooter fired at officers.
"Gunfire struck the police vehicle, on the passenger side door frame," says Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan. "The driver of the radio patrol car exited the vehicle. The passenger also exited from the driver's side. They took cover."
Police sent a robot into the house after failing to contact the shooter with a hostage negotiator. The robot discovered the two bodies. It is unclear at this time if the shooter is one of the people who was found dead.
No injuries were reported to any officers or civilians. One of the initial responding officers is a rookie cop, only on his fourth day on the job.
The standoff lasted about two hours. Over a dozen homes were evacuated.
There's no word yet on why the shooter first opened fire as an investigation continues.
