Shore Town Looks For Ways To Keep More Sand On Beach

AVALON, N.J. (CBS) - A South Jersey shore town is looking at ways to keep more of its sand on the beach.
You hear about beach replenishment projects all the time, right?
Well, over the years Avalon has saved enough data to ponder changes that could make those fills less frequent.
Mayor Marty Pagliughi says the town has hired an outside firm to look into whether building a new jetty on the north end of the beach would work.
"Actually, it's not one jetty. It's a series of jetties that would be tapered back into the beach. That's the preliminary architecture of this scheme that we're looking at," says Pagliughi.
If that preliminary plan works, they may create a live model before contacting the Army Corps of Engineers to actually do it.
The move could save money in the long run by extending sand levels from the standard three to five year life span to eight years or more.
