Shore Merchants Hope Labor Day Will Put One More 'Ka-Ching' in Their Coffers

By Cherri Gregg

OCEAN CITY, N.J. (CBS) -- Jersey shore shop owners think this holiday weekend will be a good one for business.

"We're very optimistic that this will be a very good weekend, as far as Labor Day weekends go," says Wes Kazmarck, president of the Boardwalk Merchant Association of Ocean City, NJ.

He says Labor Day weekend sales are mostly tied to the weather forecast, which this weekend is calling for some sun and temperatures in the 80s.

Kazmarck says shop owners typically use Labor Day weekend -- more than other holiday weekends -- to turn a profit.

"Usually at this point all the bill are paid, so it's money in their pocket," he tells KYW Newsradio.  "So even though it may not be the same dollar figure, it's more money that they get to keep usually."

As for benefits to shoppers, Kazmarck says, there are lots of deals.

"If you're looking for a bargain on the boardwalk, you'll never see it cheaper than it is this time of the year.  There isn't a store up here that doesn't have a good amount of their store on sale."
