Shore Bets To The Beach, Part 4: The Garden State Parkway
Some roads to the South Jersey shore have a new look. KYW's Mike DeNardo explains what has changed in the off-season on the way to the beach.

MANAHAWKIN, N.J. (CBS) — "We live in Philadelphia, so ordinarily we're just used to shore traffic," laments the typical driver headed to the shore.
At least the traffic on the Garden State Parkway won't be too affected by construction this summer. Parkway spokesman Tom Feeney says there is an ongoing widening project underway north of Atlantic City, between the Bass River and LBI-Stafford Township exits.
"It's a two-lane road in each direction now," he tells KYW Newsradio. "And we're adding one lane in each direction as we did in the section just north of the LBI exit."
But any lane closures will happen only in off-peak hours, he adds.
On the southern end of the Parkway, there are plans to remove those three traffic signals (below) that bring Parkway traffic to a stop in Cape May Courthouse.

Feeney says that's traditionally a high-accident area.
"Drivers who are on the Parkway, I think just don't expect -- when you're on a limited-access highway like that, you don't expect to come upon traffic lights. And they're just sort of out of place."
But drivers won't see any construction this summer. Feeney says the two-year, $125-million project is still awaiting wetlands approvals and likely won't go to bid before December.
