Sharon Hill Man Suffering From Schizophrenia Faces Charges For Attacking Police With Knife
SHARON HILL, P.A., (CBS) -- Delaware County District Attorney Jack Whelan and Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele announced that a man is facing assault charges for attacking a police officer with a knife.
Saveon Garrison, 22, of Sharon Hill, is charged with four counts of aggravated assault, a felony of the first degree, possessing instruments of a crime, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person.
He is currently in custody at the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia.
According to authorities, Officer Stephen Mummo and Officer Matthew MacNeal responded to a report of a disoriented subject. Garrison had informed the county radio that he recently had contact with Garrison who lived at the residence they were heading to.
Police say he is was aware that Garrison suffered from Paranoid Schizophrenia and had a history of violence and owned a knife.
Officials say that Garrison's mother met the officers at their door upon arrival. She explained to them that her son called 911, but she was unaware about why. Garrison allegedly came to the front door and began to yell at the officers and did not let them enter the home, slamming the door in their face.
Delaware County Investigations Divisions Detective arrived to assist the officers. Authorities say the door was forced open when police heard Garrison's mother screaming for help. Police say Garrison ran into the kitchen.
Officials say Garrison then re-entered the room and charged toward the police wielding a knife.
Police say Mummo fired his taser and made contact with Garrison, but he was not impacted. Authorities add that Garrison swung the knife and made contact with MacNeal's face.
Authorities say that one of the detectives on the scene fired his weapon and made contact with Garrison in the chest.
