Shane Victorino Chokes Up At Dedication Of Community Center He Helped Rebuild
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Kids in the Nicetown section of Philadelphia are settling into a newly renovated activities center that bears the name of Phillies' centerfielder Shane Victorino.
And the Flyin' Hawaiian got emotional at ceremonies officially opening the Shane Victorino Nicetown Boys and Girls Club.
"Then I know for the rest of my life that I'll make an impact on this community," Victorino said, his voice cracking, "that I can come back, say, 30 years from now, my kids can come back and say, 'Look at what my dad did for our community.' "
The club, across from Gratz High School, now has a full-size gym, a game room, and a tech center.
Victorino says he was hit with the enormity of making a difference for a child.
"I think the emotional fact of, hopefully, one of these kids will someday say that Shane Victorino made an impact in my life," he said following the ceremony.
Victorino's foundation pledged $1 million to renovate the 105-year-old building.
