Seven Philadelphia Public School Principals Garner Special Foundation Awards

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A major honor is coming today for seven principals in the Philadelphia School District. They are being presented with the prestigious Lindback Foundation's "Distinguished Principal" award.
Among the seven honorees is Dr. Karren Dunkley, the second-year principal at Parkway Center City High School. She opened a parent resource center in her school and created e-mail and phone trees to improve communcation with parents in their native languages.
Dunkley says the honor came as a surprise.
"What this award speaks to is really the remarkable ability to work with, just an amazing group of staff, and amazing group of parents, and an amazing group of scholars," she told KYW Newsradio this morning.
Each Lindback award comes with a $20,000 stipend to be spent on the school. Dunkey says that money will be used to upgrade Parkway's science lab.
