SEPTA Urging Riders To Put Safety First As Holiday Travel Season Approaches

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- As we get into the holiday travel season, SEPTA is reminding riders to keep safety in mind.
We live in a connected world, with endless information just a swipe away on our smartphones. But SEPTA spokeswoman Jerri Williams says passengers should wait until they take a seat before checking their texts and emails.
"We have a lot of distracted passengers. They're on their phone, they're talking, and they're not necessarily paying attention. We want to kind of go through some of the rules of how to be safe."
The rules are common sense. Keep clear of the yellow area on the platform when a train is pulling in. Don't leave bags unattended, and always be aware of your surroundings.
"We have very, very low crime on SEPTA. But unfortunately, cell phone theft is prevalent."
She says some people have been so distracted that they walked right off the platform and fell on to the tracks.
