SEPTA Upgrading Mass Transit To Handle US Open Crowds in Merion, Pa.
By Brad Segall
LOWER MERION, Pa. (CBS) -- The US Open golf tournament in Merion is still ten months away, but SEPTA has already started construction on a project designed to encourage more people to take public transportation to the event.
Riders on SEPTA's Norristown High Speed Line are already seeing progress on a new platform at the Ardmore Avenue train stop in Lower Merion.
The work, which is expected to be finished next spring, includes making the platforms twice as long, to be able to handle two two-car trains at one time.
SEPTA spokeswoman Heather Redfern says the work is in anticipation of an expected crush of people for the US Open.
"Just like for any sporting events in the area, it gets very congested with traffic, and we always suggest that you take public transportation."
The project also includes improved shelters and lighting, and expansion of parking.
There may also be a temporary pedestrian bridge, but those talks are still ongoing with representatives from the US Open. The championship golf tournament is scheduled for next June at Merion Golf Club.
