SEPTA To Retire Historic Silverliner Trains In June
By Dan Wing
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The Philadelphia Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society held a "Farewell to the Faithful Silverliners" tour Sunday, saluting the end of a 49-year career for the train cars originally built for the Reading and Pennsylvania Railroads.
After departing from Suburban Station, the three-car tour train traveled along a number of local lines, stopping at the Fox Chase Station for a brief farewell ceremony.
Larry Eastwood, President of the Philadelphia Chapter of the NRHS, says the Silverliners have seen a lot of history.
"They took people to the New York World's Fair in 1964 and 65. Over the years they've taken people, local people, to the Army-Navy games in South Philadelphia. So it's very, very interesting. If they could talk, they would have a real story to tell everybody."
The Silverliners are set to be taken out of service at the end of June, but a SEPTA spokesman says service will not be affected.
