SEPTA Safety Officers Urge Commuters To Ride Safely

By Mark Abrams

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - SEPTA wants riders of the Broad Street subway and Market-Frankford line to be aware of their surroundings and ride safely.

SEPTA safety officers were handing out brochures Thursday afternoon to Phillies fans preparing to board the Broad Street line near the ballpark, urging them not to gamble with their safety.

SEPTA's Jeane Thompson says most of the tips are common sense, but accidents do happen.

"One of the biggest ones is stay behind the yellow line as you're waiting for the train. People can fall over, people slip, you know if you're not paying attention like nowadays we're on our cell phones a lot, so we might be distracted," said Thompson.

And, Thompson says, distracted passengers can quickly become crime victims if they're not paying attention to their surroundings.

"Wallet, cell phones being stolen, so it's just being aware and being present is a big thing," said Thompson.
