SEPTA Fare Hikes Take Effect
By Pat Loeb
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Get ready to dig a little deeper for that SEPTA ride. Fare increases went into effect on Monday.
The basic fare for buses, trolleys and subways increased a quarter. That means $2.25 in cash or a $1.80 per token. Add 50 cents to that for a ride on the Norristown High Speed line. Regional rail fares are also going up, but SEPTA is also revising its zone system, eliminating the most expensive zone 5 altogether and moving dozens of stations to lower-fare zones.
SEPTA is encouraging riders to buy weekly or monthly passes. That will help the transition to the New Payment Technologies, the automated, electronic fare system scheduled to go into effect in 2014.
