Senator Casey Helps Serve Breakfast To Those Who Served Our Country
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Dozens of homeless veterans received a free breakfast Wednesday morning in North Philadelphia.
Impact Services Hancock Manor on Allegheny Avenue the city's Fairhill neighborhood helps 300-plus veterans in need. Many were treated to this free Veterans Day breakfast. Senator Bob Casey manned the griddle, dished out pancakes and offered his thanks. He spoke of the need to do more, especially at the VA Hospitals.
"Men and women here, who served their country, came back," Casey said, "and then had a difficult time."
Like Raymond El who served two tours in Vietnam.
"Yeah, I had problems adjusting to civilian life," El said, "and getting a job."
Coming home from Vietnam, El said he was so ashamed that he took his uniform off at the airport. The atmosphere was filled with anger and frustration directed at those who served. There was no hero's welcome.
"They were calling everybody baby killers and things like that," El said.
But that would change. With years of therapy and more public support, he would have no regrets for his service.
"I'm proud now," he said, "very proud."
