Second Person Pleads Guilty In 2009 Grays Ferry Murder
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The second killer has now pleaded guilty in a chilling case of a 2009 Grays Ferry incident involving mistaken identity and senseless murder. There is evidence this defendant did not fire, but ordered another to, "shoot them."
Prosecutor Deborah Watson-Stokes said the two victims: Harvey Lewis, 15, a member of the police cadet program who wanted to be a police officer; and his friend, Dominique Smith, 17, were in the wrong place at the wrong time and they were truely innocent.
"They just so happened to occupy the same space as both defendants: Anthony Satchell and Derek Barnes. (They) assumed that they were from a rival neighborhood," Watson-Stokes said. "When they discovered they were not from a rival neighborhood a decision was made to kill them anyway."
The gunman, Anthony Satchell, 16 when he pulled the trigger, pleaded guilty earlier and agreed to cooperate. He was given a sentence of life in prison.
The prosecutor says Derek Barnes has now pleaded guilty to third degree murder and will serve a 35-to-70 years sentence.
