Second Day Of Gaming Control Board Hearings On Philadelphia Casino License
By Steve Tawa
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Today brings day two of a second round of public hearings by the State Gaming Control Board on the six applicants who want Philadelphia's second casino license.
While most of those testifying were praising their favorite developers, the city of Philadelphia has yet to take a position. Deputy Mayor Alan Greenberger told the panel at some point the city will make a recommendation, but for now, they're still evaluating each of the proposals.
Several food service workers, like chef Tim O'Toole, favor of Steve Wynn's Fishtown project, saying it would bring higher paying union jobs.
"The non-union casino standard is a fast food standard. A Wynn Philadelphia casino would mean excellent benefits and job stability."
Center City lawyer George Bochetto thinks developer Bart Blatstein's 'Provence' on north Broad Street warrants attention.
"Who's actually been there and bet the farm, his career, on transforming neighborhoods?"
Bochetto all but announced that he would be a candidate for mayor in Philadelphia for the open seat in 2015.
Developer Ken Goldenberg's Market8 proposal at 8th and Market Streets received the best grade - a straight 'A' - from the Design Advocacy Group, which represents architects and planners.
