School Reform Commission Agrees To Open Books For Mayor Nutter

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Mayor Nutter wants the School District to open its books and give the city more say in school operations. The School Reform Commission now says, "okay."

The School Reform Commission voted 4-0 to negotiate the Educational Accountability Agreement that Mayor Nutter demanded. In his weekend letter to the SRC, Nutter said his support for more city money for schools depended on more city input.

SRC Chair Robert Archie declined to comment after the vote, but commissioner Joseph Dworetzky said the SRC welcomes the city's involvement.

"The city is one of our most major funding partners. And we want to do everything we can to assure the city that the district will cooperate with it, will provide it access to information and we'll work cooperatively with it."

The mayor's education secretary Lori Shorr said she believed an agreement could be negotiated by Nutter's deadline of noon Thursday.
