School District Of Philadelphia Recruiting Educators, Looking To Fill Nearly 1,000 Positions

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The School District of Philadelphia is courting and recruiting educators from across the region to come and teach.
Officials are looking to fill nearly 1,000 positions.
Dozens of potential teachers packed into district headquarters for Tuesday's education session, where Superintendent Dr. William Hite spoke on his vision for the district's future and why they should come here and teach.
"There are opportunities here to educate children in a way that some of us may not have even thought of. In ways that make it relevant, in ways that engage young people, in ways that allow them to problem solve and think critically."
Matt Lydon, a prospective English teacher for the district, says the information session helped assure him that teaching in Philadelphia is the right move.
"They need someone who cares, and I am one of those people. I am one of those people who cares. That's why I want to do that."
The district expects to hire at least 800 teachers for the 2016-17 school year, along with nearly 60 school nurses and 50 counselors.
