Salvation Army's Red Kettles Return For The Holidays
By Lynne Adkins
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The red kettles are back on the streets through Christmas Eve.
The Salvation Army kicked off its annual red kettle campaign on Tuesday at the Gallery at Market East.
Major Hester Dixon, Director of Operations, says the bell ringers will be out all over the region hoping people drop cash into the red buckets.
"It's for warm clothing, underthings," Dixon says. "Toys to me are an add in. I'd rather see a family fed and clothed and then something special under the tree."
She says the money donated here helps those who live here.
"We can't take care of the Philippines," Dixon says, "but we can take care of the hometown."
Last year the Salvation Army helped nearly 20,000 Philadelphians have a happier holiday.
