Salt And Plow Crews Scramble Across The Region To Keep Up With The Storm

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The storm is making a mess of travel. There are cancellations at the airport, some delays on SEPTA and NJ Transit bus and train routes, and of course, driving is no picnic.
PennDOT is out in full force, trying to stay ahead of the snow. Spokesman Nick Martino says there are more than 400 trucks on the road and he advises everyone to stay off the roads if possible.
But if you must drive he says "don't try to be weaving through our plow trucks. Make sure your lights are on. And also, a big, important factor... make sure you have gas in your vehicles because a lot of times cars break down."
Fallen trees and branches are always a danger when there's heavy, wet snow and that danger is intensified with this storm bringing high winds.
In New Jersey, NJ DOT spokesman Tim Greeley says this is an all hands on deck event:
"We have over 2,000 pieces of equipment -- this includes around 1,400 contractor snow plows, close to 500 state salt spreaders and snow plows and another 200 contractor salt spreaders."
And finally, there is a coastal flood warning in effect for the Jersey Shore until 11 a.m Saturday. Officials ask residents in boundary islands and other coastal communities to voluntarily evacuate.
