Safety Expert: After Earthquake, It's Time To Review Your Disaster Plan
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The local Red Cross is urging families, individuals and businesses to review their disaster plans after yesterday's earthquake.
"The first thing you should not do is evacuate a building," says Dave Schrader, director of communications for the Red Cross.
He says the best thing to do during an earthquake is to stay where you are and get under a sturdy desk or table.
"More people are injured from things falling on them than they are from buildings collapsing."
And stay indoors even after it's over. Gas main breaks and downed power lines could make things worse. And, if you're outside, get away from buildings, trees or power lines. Schrader says now is the time for individuals, businesses and families to review and revise disaster plans to include earthquake preparedness.
