Rutgers University President Opposes Rowan Takeover of Rutgers-Camden

TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) -- The president of Rutgers University says he's against giving the Rutgers-Camden campus over to an expanding Rowan University.
Sol Barer, the chairman of the panel that recommends the change, told the New Jersey State Senate Higher Education Committee that it's part of a plan to align New Jersey universities with the expected biotech revolution.
Barer says Rowan University's rising medical school at Cooper Hospital lacks "critical mass" without the addition of other programs a few blocks away at Rutgers-Camden.
But, responded Rutgers president Richard McCormick, "Rutgers-Camden is a very valuable part of Rutgers. Given a choice, given the ability to separate the recommendations for New Brunswick on the one hand and Camden on the other, I seriously doubt that the Boards of Governors and Trustees would want to give up the Rutgers-Camden campus."
It's not known yet how this plan might unfold, and whether it's all-or-none or pick-and-choose.
