Rutgers University Lawyer Resigns Amid Inquiry
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) -- A Rutgers University lawyer who approved a decision to suspend the men's basketball coach rather than fire him last year has resigned.
University officials announced last week that the lawyer, John Wolf, had left his leadership position. Some politicians took that to mean that he had left the university entirely.
But school officials said this week Wolf had merely stepped down from his interim role as the top in-house lawyer but remained employed at Rutgers.
Some politicians called for him to leave Rutgers amid a scandal that has claimed the jobs of basketball coach Mike Rice, an assistant coach and the athletic director.
Rice was fired last week after a video was made public showing him shoving and kicking players and using gay slurs.
The university announced Wolf's resignation Thursday.
