Rumors Link Cole Hamels To Red Sox And Yankees
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- As the Phillies continue to ponder whether or not to make a deal involving a major piece of the club, rumors are swirling. Cole Hamels is the player that would more than likely yield the greatest return for the Phillies and according to reports, two AL East powers may be interested in acquiring the Phillies' ace.
The Boston Red Sox are currently 9.5 games out of first place in the AL East, but that may not deter them from inquiring about Hamels. Coming off a World Series title, the Red Sox appear motivated to keep their window open and another front end starter may be in the cards.
According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox were one of several teams to come scout Hamels this past week. The Phillies star pitcher has four seasons left on his current deal.
Jon Morosi of Fox Sports, raised the possibility of the New York Yankees getting involved in the hunt for Hamels. The Yankees are in a better spot than the Red Sox at 5 games out of first place, but their best arm, Masahiro Tanaka recently went down with an injury that will either require weeks of rehab or Tommy John surgery. With Tanaka on the shelf, and C.C. Sabathia's health deteriorating, it is easy to understand why the Yankees would be motivated to deal for Hamels.
If the Yankees hope to make a playoff run this season, they may need to find a way to acquire Hamels, however their farm system is not in a strong state and other interested clubs will almost certainly be able to put more enticing offers in front of the Phillies brass.
Hamels reportedly has a list of nine teams that he can be traded to without the Phillies getting his consent. Both the Red Sox and Yankees are reportedly on the list.
