Rowan University Benefactor Remembered At Memorial Service On Campus
GLASSBORO, N.J., (CBS) -- Hundreds attended a memorial service for philanthropist Henry Rowan on the campus of the South Jersey university that bears his name. Rowan passed last month at the age of 92.
Hundreds of students, faculty, alumni and friends joined the Rowan family in remembering the engineering magnate whose 1992 donation of 100 million dollars made him, to quote Engineering school Dean Tony Lowman, a "hero".
Lowman remembered "He took a tremendous risk in investing in Glassboro State and in doing that he changed the lives of so many to date and so many more, so many thousands more, for generations to come."
Those who worked toward convincing the Rowan Foundation to make that gift insist it changed philanthropy for higher education across this country, with 175 gifts of similar size made to schools since Henry Rowan set the standard.
