Rowan University Again Hosting Intro to Engineering For South Jersey Schoolgirls

GLASSBORO, N.J. (CBS) -- A two-day camp at Rowan University is giving young girls a chance to get up close and personal with the world of engineering.
The school is teaming up with electric-and-natural-gas utility PSEG to mentor more than 100 girls in middle school throughout South Jersey.
Rowan has conducted the "AWE" program (short for Attracting Women into Engineering) for fifteen years now.
Lexi Basantis went through it and is now a mechanical engineering student at Rowan.
"A lot of girls are interested in math and science. It's just seeing that they don't have any peers interested sometimes discourages them," she noted today.
But twelve-year-old Carly Coppolino of Sewell, NJ, liked the hands-on approach.
"I really like engineering and I like biomedical stuff. and I really wanted to try this -- it looked really fun," she said.
Students use iPads to, among other things, design a bridge and learn how lip gloss is made.
Parents can rest easy: engineering jobs are on the increase, and more women are getting into the field.
