Rock Jetty Reconstruction Expected To Begin Monday In Longport

LONGPORT, NJ (CBS) - Construction is underway to rebuild the rock jetty on 11th street in Longport after Superstorm Sandy bashed portions of it to pieces.
"There were rocks that weigh a ton or more than the ocean moved 30 feet," says Mayor Nick Russo.
Some of those rocks landed inside of the oceanfront homes which sit along the rock wall.
Starting Monday, heavy machinery is clearing the way for larger rocks than before to replace what was lost.
"This is important for the protection of the south portion of Absecon Island, and it's symbolic of doing what we need to do to prepare for future storms," says Russo.
The project will cost $500,000. Longport plans to pay using an emergency fund, and Russo says the borough will apply for reimbursement from FEMA.
The new wall will be taller than the first and offer better protection against storm surge.
A ribbon cutting ceremony is planned for 10 a.m. on Thursday.
The project is expected to be completed by the end of August, and there are plans to construct an artificial beach in front of the wall.
