Road Closures For 'Free Streets,' Other Events In Philadelphia This Weekend
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The City of Philadelphia announced several traffic closures for the upcoming weekend.
Philadelphia's first-annual Free Streets will take place along South Street, from Front Street to Schuylkill Avenue and in Fairmount Park near the Please Touch Museum. The event will be held on Saturday, September 24.
If you need to cross South Street, you will be allowed to do so at the following intersections:
- 4th Street
- 7th Street
- 8th Street
- 11th Street
- Broad Street
- 19th Street
- 20th Street
- 22nd Street
- 23rd Street
Front Street will remain open to traffic.
Roads will close around 6:00 a.m. for setup and should be open by 2:00 p.m. The city announced that police will be assigned to the event and travelers are warned that traffic in the area could be heavy.
Also on Saturday, the Asian American United Festival and Parade will be held at 8:00 a.m. Southbound on 10th Street will be closed at Race Street and will reopen by 10:00 p.m. The parade is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. It will start at 10th and Arch Street and head west on Arch to 11th Street, north to Race Street, east to 9th Street, north to Winter Street, west to 10th Street and south to Cherry Street.
The Ratha-Yatra Parade is set for Parkway, between 16th and Eakins Oval on Saturday. The parade will begin at 17th Street and head west on the Ben Franklin Parkway to Logan Circle before going west onto the inner drive of the Parkway to Eakins Oval.
The 1600 block of the Parkway will close at 9:00 a.m. for set up before the parade starts at 12:30 p.m.
On Sunday, two runs will take place: the Global Energy Run and the Parkway Run.
The Global Energy Run begins at 7:30 a.m. All roads on the course will close at 6:30 a.m. The run will start on S. Columbus Blvd. from Walnut Street toward Washington Avenue. Runners will then take to the Delaware River Trail and head east before turning around behind Wal-Mart. They will continue north to S. Columbus Blvd to Spring Garden Street.
They will head north on Delaware Avenue just past Shackamaxon Avenue then turn around near Marlborough Street and follow the same course. All roads will reopen by 10:00 a.m.
The Parkway Run will begin at 8:30 a.m. The run will take place on the Parkway between Logan Circle and Eakins Oval on MLK Drive. The run is expected to end by 11:30 a.m. Once the run ends, setup will start for the Puerto Rican Day Parade.
