Reward Offered After Delco Driver Injured By Pumpkin Thrown Through Windshield

NETHER PROVIDENCE TOWNSHIP, Pa. (CBS) -- Authorities in Delaware County are looking for whoever stole pumpkins from a local farm producer and used them as "missiles," throwing them from moving vehicles onto cars that were parked or passing by.
In one instance, police say, a 29-year-old man was seriously injured.
Nether Providence police detective Michael Erickson says that on December 1st, just before midnight, a 29-year-old driver was going westbound on Baltimore Pike, "when he heard a large bang and something hit him in the face, and the subsequent explosion."
Erickson says it was a pumpkin, thrown from a car passing by, going through the victim's windshield.
"When they were thrown from the vehicle they were probably rock hard," Erickson tells KYW Newsradio, "which explains why the pumpkin in this incident went directly through the windshield, striking the driver directly in the face."
The victim suffered cuts on his face and got glass in his eye, causing problems the unnamed victim still has to deal with, according to Erickson.
Authorities say similar incidents have occurred in the area recently, but mostly with parked cars. Police say the pumpkins were probably taken from a dump at nearby Linvilla Orchards, where people left their holiday pumpkins.
The victim's family is offering a $500 reward. Anyone with information is asked to call Nether Providence Police at 610-892-2875.
