Retired Philly Police Captain Arrested In NY 'Occupy Wall Street' Rally Warned
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A retired Philadelphia police captain arrested in uniform during Occupy Wall Street protests in New York City is getting a warning from police and union officials.
Philadelphia police Commissioner Charles Ramsey has sent a cease and desist letter to retired Capt. Raymond Lewis. Ramsey says Lewis has every right to protest but shouldn't be doing it in a police uniform.
The commissioner said Thursday it doesn't matter whether it's a demonstration for Occupy Wall Street or another cause.
Ramsey says it's disrespectful and could lead people to assume Lewis is making a statement on behalf of the police department.
Lewis says the local Fraternal Order of Police union has filed a grievance stemming from last month's incident. A union spokesman did not immediately return a call for comment.
