Restrictions On Teen Tanning Pass Out Of NJ Senate Committee

TRENTON, NJ (CBS) - The New Jersey Senate Health Committee held a hearing Monday afternoon on proposed legislation that would bar anyone under 18 from using indoor tanning beds in the Garden State. An amended version of the bill was approved.
On Monday, a parade of witnesses testified against, and for, the legislation -- tanning salon owners, industry advocates, doctors, parents and even a young melanoma survivor who attributed her cancer to the use of tanning beds.
"I hope by my words today, it will encourage you to pass this bill. No mother, or father, or guardian, should have to deal with their child having going through what I had to go through."
The Assembly passed legislation last month that bars anyone under 18 from using indoor tanning beds. The version approved Monday bans indoor tanning by anyone under 16, and allows 16 and 17 year olds to tan only if a parent is present when the tanning sessions are bought. It also bars them from tanning on consecutive days.
