Reports Show Atlantic City Airport Offers Great Deals On Fares

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (CBS) - For the third straight year, a local airport has been found to offer the lowest average fares in America. But your travel options may be somewhat limited.

Studies completed for the U.S. Department of Transportation found lower fares out of Atlantic City International than from any other airport in the country. Sounds good, but you have to put that assessment in perspective.

"ACY consists of low fare carriers, whereas compared to any metro airport, they have a lot of legacy carriers," said Sharon Gordon with the South Jersey Transportation Authority. "They have the higher mix of business and leisure travelers, and those fares, obviously, are always higher."

To offer a comparison here, the average domestic fare out of Atlantic City is just over $150, while the average out of Philadelphia is just under $350. Atlantic City is served primarily by Spirit and AirTran. The latter is now owned by Southwest, and it's hoped that might lead to additional flights to more destinations at some point.
