Report: Sixers To Interview Hornacek, Malone For Head Coaching Job
By Spike Eskin
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The Sixers have asked for, and received permission to interview Golden State Warriors assistant coach Mike Malone, and Utah Jazz assistant coach Jeff Hoernacek for their vacant head coaching position, according to a report from Yahoo! Sports.
Malone's Warriors are currently leading the Nuggets three games to two in their opening round playoff series. The Jazz missed the playoffs this season.
The report from Yahoo's Adrian Wojnarowksi says that Malone is considered a "serious" candidate for the job.
Sixers fans will remember Hornacek as one of three players the team received in a trade for Charles Barkley in 1992 with the Phoenix Suns. The Sixers also received Andrew Lang and Tim Perry. The Suns finished with the best record in the NBA the following season, and Barkley was the league's MVP. The Sixers finished 26-56. None of this is particularly relevant to Hornacek potentially being the Sixers head coach, it's just sort of natural to bring up bad memories when talking about the Sixers recently. Hornacek has been an assistant in Utah for the last two seasons.
Brian Shaw is also mentioned in the report as a candidate, as well has Memphis Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins, if he does not remain with the team.
