Phillies Sign Marlon Byrd To 2-Year, $16 Million Deal
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Phillies have signed outfielder Marlon Byrd to a two-year, $16 million contract, Senior Vice President & General Manager Ruben Amaro Jr. announced Tuesday night.
The contract includes a club/vesting option for 2016 and award bonuses.
"Marlon adds a significant upgrade both offensively and defensively to our outfield," said Amaro. "He has been particularly productive against left-handed pitching which was a serious challenge for us this past season. He is an experienced middle-of-the-order hitter who creates some balance to our lineup. With his talent and clubhouse presence, we believe Marlon will be a solid addition to our club as we address our needs and plan to contend in 2014 and beyond."
Byrd played with the New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates in 2013.
Byrd started his 12-year MLB career with the Phillies in 2002. Byrd has a career average of .280, with a career OPS of .761. He hit .291 with 24 home runs and 88 RBIs in 2013 in 147 games, with an OPS of .847.
Byrd will wear #3.
