Report: Phillies Heavily Scouting Red Sox For Potential Hamels Deal
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- The trade deadline has come and gone, but that doesn't mean the Phillies are done trying to make deals. Cole Hamels, who was reportedly claimed by the Cubs last week after waivers began, could be on the move.
Accoridng to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Phillies have been scouting the Red Sox...a lot.
"Don't think in 30 years of covering baseball I've ever seen a team (the Phillies) spend so much time scouting another team (the Red Sox) and not pull the trigger on a deal," Cafardo wrote in his column. "Even after the trade deadline, the Phillies have had a scout in Boston, St. Louis, and Anaheim watching Boston's young players. The match would be Cole Hamels for young players, and it may very well heat up this offseason. Hamels, according to a source close to him, would be open to a deal with the Red Sox."
The Red Sox have some attractive young players like shortstop/third baseman Xander Bogaerts, centerfielder Jackie Bradley Jr. and catcher Christian Vasquez. Also, the Red Sox dealt their left-handed ace pitcher, Jon Lester, to Oakland on the July 31st trade deadline.
Hamels, 30, is 6-6 with a 2.37 ERA in 21 games started this season.
