Report: Pete Rose Bet On Baseball While Playing
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Pete Rose has always maintained that he never bet on baseball while he was a player. However, new documents obtained by ESPN's Outside The Lines contradict that claim.
According to the report, incriminating documents are copies of pages from a notebook that were seized in 1989 during a raid of one of Rose's associates, about two months after Rose was exiled from baseball. The raid stemmed from a mail fraud investigation and was not related to Rose's gambling, ESPN reported.
"This does it. This closes the door," said John Dowd, the former federal prosecutor who led MLB's investigation.
The betting records discovered were from March through July of 1986. They show no evidence of Rose ever betting against his team, the Cincinnati Reds.
Rose denied that he ever bet on baseball as a player, as recently as two months ago.
