Report: Intersections Around Philadelphia's City Hall Are Busiest For Red Light Cameras
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – New findings from AAA show that Philadelphia's intersections near City Hall are again the busiest red light camera intersections.
The top-ticketed location is South Broad Street and Penn Square on the south side of City Hall, according to the PPA, with 22,611 violations in 2012.
The second most-ticketed spot is at North Broad and JFK Boulevard, located on the north side of City Hall, with 20,084 tickets.
According to AAA, both of these spots saw a significant jump in tickets from 2011, largely due to the fact that the red light cameras in these areas were shut off in 2011 for road construction.
AAA also studied the accident numbers for 10 red light camera intersections that have been in operation for at least three years in Philadelphia. They found a 66% reduction in fatalities and 24% drop in injury crashes. However, most of the intersections studied are along Roosevelt Boulevard, which is notorious for crashes and where red light cameras are part of a multi-faceted safety effort.
The Pennsylvania State Transportation Advisory Committee says that red light camera violations typically drop by about 50% after the first year following installation, when drivers adjust their habits because of the presence of the cameras.
