Report: Bucs Prefer Winston, Eagles Only Comparable NFL Offense For Mariota
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- According to Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com, "early indicators" are that Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston will be the No. 1 overall pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
That could be good news for Chip Kelly and the Philadelphia Eagles, who have the No. 20 overall pick, if Marcus Mariota is indeed a dream of theirs.
"I've heard that coach Lovie Smith prefers Winston over Oregon's Marcus Mariota," writes Yasinskas. "From what I have gathered, Smith chose Dirk Koetter as his offensive coordinator over Marc Trestman. The logic was simple. Although Smith and Trestman had similar philosophies about how to run an offense, they disagreed on the quarterbacks. Trestman preferred Mariota.
"Smith favors Winston and Smith is the boss."
The Bucs run a more pro-style offense, more similar of what Winston ran in college compared to Mariota. According to Yasinskas, only one NFL team runs a comparable offense to what Mariota ran at Oregon. Which team?
Yup, you guessed it.
"The offense Mariota ran looked nothing like [what Winston ran at Florida State] and the only comparable NFL offense is what the Philadelphia Eagles run."
