Report: A Dozen Teams Interested In Trading For Michael Young
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The Phillies, save for Domonic Brown and Cliff Lee, are off for a few days for the Major League Baseball All-Star break. But with the trade deadline now two weeks away, there is no time off for general manager Ruben Amaro.
Though the team's recent run to get back to .500 may change the organizational stance from "seller" to "buyer," one name that might be part of either discussion is third baseman Michael Young.
Kevin Frandsen, who filled in admirably last season and has been the team's best bench player this season could play third base if Young is moved. As well, Cody Asche has played well enough at AAA Lehigh Valley to warrant a look at the major league level.
It looks like there will be a lot of interest in Young league-wide. There is "intense" interest in Michael Young around the league, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.
"About a dozen clubs have checked in on Young, according to major league sources," Rosenthal says. "Included among them: The Boston Red Sox, who had their vice president of player personnel, Allard Baird, watch the Phillies in back-to-back series before the All-Star break, sources say."
Rosenthal notes that a shortage of right handed hitting on the trade market has made Young particularly valuable.
A Young trade could work in either a "buy" or a "sell" approach. Obviously, in a "sell" move, Young could bring back a young player who could help in the future. In "buy" mode, Young could return a bullpen arm or a centerfielder who could fill-in during Ben Revere's absence.
