Governor Rendell is renewing his pitch for more spending on roads, bridges, rail lines, and other transportation "infrastructure" improvements.
Rendell (at lectern in photo) traveled to a Harrisburg, Pa. rail yard today to highlight a report by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. The report predicts that overall freight demand will double in 40 years, and that in 20 years the number of trucks on highways will increase by 50 percent:
"Now let me give you an example of just what that means. On I-81, the increase will take us from 10,000 trucks daily to 15,000 trucks. The number of trucks on I-80 will go from 9,000 to 13,000. And the number of trucks on I-95 will go from 16,000 to 24,000 trucks daily."
The report recommends adding 32,000 lane-miles to the interstate highway system and upgrading 14,000 lane-miles of the national highway system to interstate standards.
