Rendell Expected To Sign Bill To Ease Looming Pension Crisis
HARRISBURG (CBS) - Governor Rendell is expected to sign a bill on its way from the state House that would address a huge bump in costs for Pennsylvania's two big employee retirement funds.
Opponents of the pension bill claim it merely postpones paying the piper, calling it "generational theft." Not so says central Pennsylvania House Republican Glen Grell:
"For those who argue that this bill pushes the pension problem down the road, I want to make sure that you and the public know about the nine long-term reforms that will significantly affect the benefits offered to all new state and school district employees, and to legislators."
The bill also contains a provision inserted by the Senate that will create an independent office to analyze state finances. The measure was approved by the House over the objections of some who claim that the dual purposes of the bill violate the state constitution, making it vulnerable to a court challenge.
