Redevelopment Plan For Black Horse Pike Moves Forward
By David Madden
EGG HARBOR, N.J. (CBS) -- Officials in Egg Harbor Township are moving ahead on a plan to rid the Black Horse Pike of a string of seedy motels and businesses that lead into Atlantic City.
They've been more than an eyesore for years. Just ask mayor Sonny McCullough:
"We've had a series of homicides," he tells KYW Newsradio. "If you recall about five years ago, they found four prostitutes murdered behind one of those motels [see related story]. We've had narcotics transactions there."
The motels' owners balked at being bought out… until Superstorm Sandy hit. Now, four have agreed to sell. They'll be paid from a $2½-million Casino Reinvestment Development Authority grant.
McCullough says he needs about $7 million more to obtain the rest of the land and hopes that Trenton legislators can come up with that.
His vision includes offices, businesses, and condominium apartments atop garage-type parking, because that part of the Black Horse Pike floods out a lot.
