Recruiter Offers Advice To Laid-Off Lockheed Martin Employees
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - A local recruiter has some advice for area Lockheed Martin workers who may find themselves unemployed soon after the company announced plans to lay off more than 12-hundred workers, many of them in the Philadelphia area.
The layoffs could affect more than 800 workers in the region. Jeff Zinser, who owns Right Recruiting in Blue Bell, says typically defense industry workers are highly specialized and could find it difficult to move into other industries. He says those workers who lose their positions should take it one step at a time and look at it as a process, "Your first goal is to put together a good resume, your second goal is to find relevant place to send it which means doing research on companies, the third is to interview well, the fourth is to get offers."
His advice: look at the pharmaceutical and commercial aviation industries and, when it comes to the resume, eliminate jargon and acronyms that hold weight in the defense industry but mean nothing to other employers. "If you're looking outside that industry, you have to be very careful with that. I guess the phrase is dumbing down your resume. You need to make it as simple as possible."
He believes defense jobs will remain on the decline for several years.
