Reading Soldier Killed In Afghanistan
READING, Pa. (CBS) -- A soldier from Berks County has died supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Authorities say Spc. Anthony Vargas, 27, of Reading, died Nov. 8 in Afghanistan after being attacked by insurgents. Vargas' unit was hit by an improvised explosive device in Nangarhar province.
Vargas was assigned to 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), in Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
Vargas is survived by his wife and three young children who reside in Tennessee and his parent's Julio and Maria Vargas, both of Reading.
