Rand Paul: Donald Trump Is A Fake Conservative
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Kentucky Senator and presidential candidate Rand Paul continued his attacks on Donald Trump, calling him a fake and pointing out previous positions he has held that are antithetical to Republicans.
Paul told Dom Giordano on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT that he's made it a mission to expose Trump.
"We are worried about fake conservatives, Republicans who weren't really being honest with us. I think, frankly, that's what Donald Trump is, a fake conservative. He spent most of his life as a progressive Democrat, was for Obamacare and was for the President's stimulus plan and really, one of the most heinous things is that he's used his whole career by taking people's property through eminent domain, and when asked about the Kelo case, a case that conservatives universally despise, the case where the Supreme Court said that private property could be taken from one owner and given to another if the second owner promises to pay more in taxes, like a casino, like a Trump casino, he's said he's 100 percent behind this decision. I don't know of any conservative who supports this decision in the country. We just have to go around pointing that out because it is a contrast, it is a competition, and right now there have been numbers flocking to Trump. So, I will spend the time letting people know he's a fake conservative."
He is suspicious of Trump's decision this week to sign a loyalty pledge not to run as an independent, and said Republicans will need everyone in the party to turn out if they hope to win the Presidency.
"I don't think that the Republican Party apparatus should be used by someone who plans to run as the third party. I also know that you need all Republicans if you become the nominee. When I ran for the Senate, I won a big primary against the establishment 60 to 40, but I couldn't have won the general election without the 40 percent of the Republicans who didn't support me coming home to support me in the general."
While Paul is having trouble gaining traction in national polls, he did point to some polls where his campaign is doing very well.
"There are other polls that poll Republicans against Democrats, which i think is an interesting poll and, actually, where we're doing very well is that we lead Hillary Clinton in five states won by President Obama. That's ultimately how you win. We actually lead Hillary Clinton in Pennsylvania, where a Republican hasn't won since 1988. We think that's a good omen."
