Ramsey Makes Pledge To PAL

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The Philadelphia Police Athletic League U8 has kicked off another year of fundraising for the popular program that helps keep kids out of trouble.

These are lean times for cash-strapped states and municipalities. But even as the city of Camden was laying off half it's police force yesterday,  Philadelphia police commissioner Charles Ramsey made a pledge to business, media, and civic leaders at PAL's annual Sponsor and Media Appreciation luncheon.

"Despite any kind of cutbacks or any kind of cutbacks or any kind of issues that we may have in our department, the one program I will not touch is PAL," he said. "I won't touch it because I think that it's core to the mission of police, and that's crime prevention."

This year the non-profit cops helping kids program plans to honor Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr. and two other people at PAL's annual awards dinner, which accounts more than a third of the organization's annual budget.
