Raising A Thinking Child

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - In light of escalating violence and drug-abuse among the nation's youth, it's critical that we teach children skills at a very early age that help them think about what they do so they won't hurt themselves or others.

Raising a Thinking Child, a program for parents of children ages 4 to 7 teaches children how to solve everyday problems like wanting something they can't have. Parents learn a unique way to talk with their children who, for example, demand "I want it NOW!" or melt into a tantrum.

Dr. Myrna Shure of Drexel University has found in her research that as early as age 4, Raising a Thinking Child can prevent and reduce problem behaviors as aggression, inability to make good friends, and can promote genuine empathy and concern for others.

The program, approved by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, is now translated into Spanish and used nationwide, as well as in Mexico.
