Raccoon Tests Positive For Rabies In South Jersey
WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBS) – Officials in Camden County have confirmed that a raccoon removed from a yard of a Waterford Township home has tested positive for rabies.
On February 24th, two family dogs killed a raccoon in the yard of the Camden County home. An animal control officer sent the raccoon for testing at the New Jersey Public Health & Environmental Laboratories in Trenton.
The Camden County Health Department says it was notified on Thursday that the animal was rabid.
Officials say the dogs are current with their vaccinations and have received rabies boosters from their veterinarian.
"Although rabies is a serious illness, it can be prevented by early treatment," said Freeholder Carmen Rodriguez, liaison to the Camden County Health Department.
