Public Meetings Begin On Philadelphia's Search For New Schools Superintendent
By Mike DeNardo
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - What do you want to see in the next Philadelphia schools superintendent? Public meetings begin tonight, giving you a chance to sound off.
Mastery Gratz High School, on 1798 West Hunting Park Avenue, is hosting tonight's forum which begins at 6:30 p.m. It is the first of a series of 10 scheduled meetings where people can say what the School Reform Commission should look for in its next Superintendent.
For his part, Mayor Nutter says the new super will have to run a portfolio of traditional public and charter schools.
"I think some of the essential qualities are, the ability to manage a large organization that is very complicated -- multiple funding streams, and numerous bosses, if you will," Nutter said. "I think this is a person who has to, again, be able to operate in a highly complex environment with multiple unions -- hundreds of thousands of parents, children who comes with all kinds of educational attainment opportunities."
The meetings run through February 21. The SRC will use the input to craft its selection process. They hope to hire a new superintendent by July.
