Public Invited to Attend Human Trafficking Prevention Rally
By David Madden
TRENTON, NJ (CBS) - Law enforcement in New Jersey will gather today (from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.) at the state capitol in Trenton to highlight actions being taken to combat human trafficking. The public is invited to take part.
It's been a top priority of Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa, who equates the practice with modern day slavery. And New Jersey's geographic position makes it prime for those looking to exploit others for sexual gratification or financial gain -- or both. Particularly those under 18.
"People who may not have strong family relationships or communities that support them. They may not speak the language and they need to know that there's someone looking out for them."
Not just in his office, but prosecutors in all 21 counties have staffers assigned to address the issue. The event will feature some actual victims and experts to point out potential signs of a problem that could be hiding in plain sight.
