Proponents of Medical Marijuana in NJ Discuss Next Steps
It's been about eight months since New Jersey passed its medical marijuana laws and about 70 people gathered in Trenton, talking about how to move the program forward.
KYW's Jim Melwert reports under the medical marijuana law that was passed in January, regulations were to be drafted by June. That deadline was pushed back to October. And coalition for medical marijuana of New Jersey spokesman Chris Goldstein says now it's time to move forward:
"We're hoping the department of health and senior services will begin in the fall. The first thing they could do is start the patient registry and then we'll know the amount of patients, where they are, where these six alternative treatment centers would be best located."
Goldstein says hopefully that begins in October. He says there are other states with decent systems so this isn't being crafted in a vacuum. And he adds, the law's already been passed, now it's time to make it work.
